Computationally-Enhanced Craft Items: Toward "Programmable Parts" for Educational Robotics

چکیده

The notion of educational robotics—much like the broader notion of robotics in general—permits a variety of interpretations. As robots differ in their design, so do the educational issues accentuated by these devices. The issues involved in (e.g.) creating a model of a stationary industrial robot might be quite different from those involved in creating a model Mars rover; creations made of Lego bricks raise engineering concerns different from those made of Fischertechnik pieces; the notion of "machine vision" for a soccer-playing robot might be distinct from that for a Braitenberg [1984] vehicle that simply avoids obstacles.

Geometry-Specific Languages and Their Interfaces

Traditionally, programming languages have been designed with an eye toward implementation on general-purpose computers. The advent of computationally-enhanced craft items–small programmable objects with simple geometries and scaled-down computational components–suggests the need for new language and software environment models tailored for these objects. In some respects, the task of the craft-...

Computation and Construction Kits: Toward the Next Generation of Tangible Building Media for Children

Construction kits represent a venerable, creative, and (occasionally) even beautiful genre of educational toys for children. Nonetheless, traditional construction kits have limitations as educational media. In the past decade, a number of research efforts have attempted to address these limitations by augmenting construction kit design with various types of computational media. This paper descr...

Discussing about IBSE, Constructivism and Robotics in (and out of the) Schools

When we look for “Inquiry Based Science Education” (IBSE) in a search engine we find more than 2.000.000 items. The IBSE we refer to is, at the same time, a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach enriched with experimental activities (using technological tools) and a constructivist learning method. It is consistent with our overall conception of the science and technology school activity, an act...

Computationally-Enhanced Books: Blending Sensor-Based Interaction with Traditional Craft

Books are an important part of early childhood. Pop-up and movable books add a touch of magic to the experience. Believing that the magic comes from the process of the craftsperson, we describe two computationally-enhanced books that blend traditional and digital craft to add the magic of sensor-based interaction to the experience. The first book explores the process of making handmade paper an...

Robotics and Machine Vision for Introduction to Flexible Automation to Engineering Undergraduates

1 Abhijit Nagchaudhuri, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, MD. 21853-1299, [email protected] Abstract Robots and numerically controlled machines allow easy reprogramming capability to adapt to varying task requirements and hence have found extensive use in manufacturing automation in factories. Although programmable robots have provided some degree of flexibility in ...
